Jenna Bergström completed her internship in Malta, Sliema and St. Julians. She shares her experiences from the internship and how she spent her free time. The presentation includes information about traveling, living, the workplace, and leisure activities in Malta.
Travelling in Malta
Jenna purchased her flight tickets to Malta months before departure. She travelled around Malta mainly by walking or by bus. She noticed that the traffic in Malta was quite different from Finland: more hectic and the streets were narrower. She received a free bus card that allowed her to travel on Tallinja buses. She took the bus to work and also used it to visit sights during her free time.
Living in Malta
Jenna lived in a student apartment in Swieqi, which was a quiet area. She mentions that living was quite similar to Finland, but she had to drink bottled water because the tap water was not safe. She also used a gas stove for cooking. She received a new SIM card from school for internet access, but eventually used her own phone for internet access.
Workplace
Jenna worked at a women’s clothing store called YAMAMAY in Sliema and St. Julians. Her work duties included hanging products, folding, packing, unpacking new products, and restocking shelves. Her workdays started at 10:00 AM and ended at 7:00 PM. She found her workdays quite relaxed and enjoyable, and she always had enough time to complete the given tasks at work. She learned a bit of Italian on the job, but mostly spoke English with customers and other staff.
Leisure Activities
Jenna used her free time to rest or explore local attractions. She visited Valletta, Gozo, and Comino. She particularly enjoyed the cave adventure in Gozo, the old and beautiful buildings in Valletta, the Blue Lagoon, and the stunning landscapes in Comino.
Jenna shares that she learned to use new means of transportation in Malta, Italian, patience, and English. She says that initially, it was difficult to adapt to the temperatures, living conditions, and bus traffic, but she quickly adjusted. She recommends an internship abroad to everyone, as it is a great opportunity to learn new skills.
